What are BLE tags?
BLE tags, or Bluetooth tags, are small, durable devices that send out a signal every 8 seconds once activated. The ON!Track app on your phone, along with Warehouse Gateways, Vehicle Gateways, Telematics Gateways, and the global Trackunit network, can capture this Bluetooth signal. When the tags are scanned, the tag number and location information are sent to the Hilti IOT cloud, which processes the data and displays it in ON!Track. This lets you see when and where an asset was last seen and by which device. You can also perform a nearby scan to find assets with BLE tags nearby.
BLE tags also have an accelerometer, which logs tool usage and stores this data until read by a Gateway or mobile app. This usage information, shown as "Idle" time in ON!Track, helps you see when a tool was last used. More details on this will be covered in the next learning module.
Adding a BLE tag to an asset
To add a BLE tag to an asset, whether new or existing, follow these steps:
1. Wake up the BLE tag using the mobile app. Onboarding new tags can only be done this way. The example below uses the iOS app, but the process is similar for Android.
2. For an existing asset, find the asset, enter edit mode, and add the tag.
3. For a new asset, click "+", select "Unique Asset", and change the scan code type to "ON!Track Smart Tag" on the barcode scan screen. Follow the prompts to scan the QR code on the tag.
4. Flip the tag over and keep your phone close to it. This activates the accelerometer inside the tag and turns it on permanently. From now on, it will send out a Bluetooth signal every 8 seconds until the battery runs out.
Are the tags bound to this account?
Yes, tags are bound to your ON!Track account when onboarded. If you accidentally use the wrong account, you have 14 days to delete the asset and re-onboard the tag to the correct account. After 14 days, the tag cannot be moved.
What about tools shipped with BLE tags from the warehouse?
For ON!Track + Fleet customers, tools (not batteries or chargers) are shipped from the warehouse with pre-activated BLE tags. These tags are bound to your account when the tools are shipped. There is no need to activate these tags again; simply scan the QR code and onboard the tag like a normal asset.
