Geo Tag Movement detection - How it works?

  • Updated

Roles: Employee | Interface: Web Platform

Getting reliable location of your valuable equipment twice a day is great but you might find yourself thinking that it would be great if it was more times. Well more times means shorter battery life and lets face it... If we do not need to change the batteries would be best.

That is why we have added a feature called movement detection. You will get a location update still 6am and 6pm and ontop of that if the equipment moves. Geo tag will now detect that the equipment is moving and reports its location in ON!Track that I am here and I have started moving. When the equipment stops Geo tag will wake up again and report I am here and I have stoped moving.

With this you will always know where your equipment is. If it stays unmoving for days, no problem the 6am and 6pm update will keep your data fresh. Smart right?

How does it look in ON!Track

In the asset details panel you see the following segment:

And you of course have the pin on the map.

How to turn Movement detection on

As default per all Geo tags the movement detection is disabled. You can enable it per device as you need it. It will work on any Geo tags.

Setting up the Movement detection you will do through Edit asset. Select the asset that is tracked with a Geo tag and click Edit. Check the box Movement detection and the trakcer will update its configuration next time it wakes up. Either 6am or 6pm. Notice that the device will detect movement only after the next location update and might take up to 12h to start detecting movement.

How is the movement detected - in short

The device detects trips based on accelerometer activity.
It takes around 4 seconds of accelerometer activity to begin a trip
The trip will end after 5 minutes of no accelerometer activity.

Long version

Accelerometer wakes the unit. In order the start a trip Geo tag will look for a period of 4sec and look for at least 1 sec of above average movement.

Once movement has been detected and Geo tag is active, the accelerometer no longer wakes the Geo tag. It wakes every three minutes on a timer, and does two things. Asks the accelerometer if there was any movement in the last 3 minutes. If it is time to log a position, it gets a fix and records it. Once the accelerometer claims there has been no movement for 5mins, Geo tag declares movement has stopped.
