Geo Tag Movement Detection explanation

Roles: Employee | Interface: Web Platform

Overview

The Geo Tag AI T400 reports your equipment's location twice daily — at 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM. For equipment that moves frequently, you can enable Movement Detection to get additional location updates whenever the equipment starts or stops moving.

With Movement Detection enabled, you receive a location update:

  • At the scheduled 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM check-ins

  • When the equipment starts moving

  • When the equipment stops moving

This means you always have a current location — whether the equipment stays in one place for days or moves between sites throughout the day.

Important: Movement Detection reports location at the start and end of movement only — not continuously during transit. There are no location updates while the equipment is in motion between those two points

How to turn Movement detection on

Prerequisite: Movement detection must first be enabled at the company level under Company Settings → Asset Tracking, and only then can it be activated per individual Geo tag.

By default, movement detection is disabled for all geo tags. You can enable it per device as you need it. It will work on any Geo tags.

  • Enable at company level (Admin only)
    • Go to Company Settings → Asset Tracking.

    • Enable the Movement Detection option.

  • Enable per Geo Tag
    • Navigate to the asset tracked with a Geo Tag AI T400.

    • Click Edit Asset.

    • Check the Movement Detection box.

    • Save.

  • The Geo Tag will download the new configuration at its next scheduled check-in (6:00 AM or 6:00 PM). Movement detection will begin working after that configuration update is received.

How Movement Detection works

The Geo Tag uses a built-in accelerometer to detect physical movement:

  1. The accelerometer detects sustained activity for approximately 4 seconds (including at least 1 second of above-average movement) to confirm a trip has started.

  2. The Geo Tag records its location and reports to ON!Track: "Movement started."

  3. When the accelerometer detects no movement for 5 minutes, the Geo Tag records its location and reports: "Movement stopped."

No location data is transmitted while the equipment is in transit between the start and stop points.

And you of course have the pin on the map.

Battery life impact

The Geo Tag AI T400 is powered by 3× AAA batteries with a battery life of up to 5 years under standard twice-daily reporting.

Enabling Movement Detection will reduce battery life. The extent depends on how frequently the equipment moves — equipment that moves multiple times per day will consume battery faster than equipment that moves occasionally.

Consider enabling Movement Detection only on equipment where the additional visibility justifies the trade-off.

Summary

Movement Detection extends the Geo Tag AI T400 beyond its standard twice-daily location reports. When enabled, you receive additional updates whenever equipment starts or stops moving — giving you a more current picture of where your assets are.

To get started: enable Movement Detection in Company Settings, then activate it on individual Geo Tags through Edit Asset. Keep in mind the battery life trade-off and allow up to 12 hours for activation.
