Understanding Van, HEM, and Stationary Gateways: A Simple User Guide

  • Updated

Overview of Gateways

Stationary Gateway (AI G125)

  • Fixed installation at warehouses, depots, or offices.
  • Continuously scans for smart tags in its range.
  • Provides accurate inventory and location data for assets stored at a fixed site.

Van Gateway (TU-600)

  • Installed in service vans.
  • Scans for nearby smart tags attached to tools and assets.
  • Sends location and inventory data to the system.
  • Useful for tracking assets in transit or on job sites.

HEM Gateway (Heavy Equipment Management) (TU-600)

  • Mounted on heavy equipment or containers.
  • Scans for smart tags on assets stored or used with the equipment.
  • Sends both geolocation and inventory data.
  • Provides information on the Machinery utilization

Scan Intervals

  • Stationary Gateways (AI G125):

    • Typically scan continuously or at short, regular intervals.
    • Always prioritize stationary gateway data over mobile scans for accuracy.
  • Van & HEM Gateways (TU-600):

    • Scan every 10 minutes when parked.
    • Scan every 2 minutes when moving or working.
    • Tested to detect up to 500 smart tags reliably.

Offline Status & Smart Tag Proximity

  • Offline Status:

    • A gateway may show as "offline" if it cannot communicate with the server, even if powered and smart tags are nearby.
    • Common causes: network issues, configuration errors, or hardware faults.
    • LED indicators help diagnose status (green = OK, red = error).
  • No Smart Tag Nearby (for Van & HEM Gateways only):

    • If no smart tags are detected, the gateway may appear inactive or not update inventory.
    • The gateway itself remains online if powered and connected, but inventory data will not update until tags are detected.

Smart Inventory Explained

  • What is Smart Inventory?

    • An automated system that checks which assets are present at a location using gateways and smart tags.
    • Shows a near real-time list of all detected assets.
    • Helps prevent loss and ensures assets are where they should be.
  • How it Works:

    • Gateways scan for smart tags.
    • Detected tags are reported to the system, updating the inventory.
    • If an asset is missing or unexpectedly present, the system flags it.
  • Benefits:

    • Saves time compared to manual checks.
    • Reduces errors and asset loss.
    • Provides instant visibility of asset locations.

Stationary Gateways and Geolocation data

For locations with stationary gateways, Geolocation data (location information) is only displayed if the address is maintained in the location. Here’s what this means:

  • Stationary gateways do not have built-in GPS or geolocation capabilities.
  • Instead, they are assigned to a specific location (such as a warehouse or jobsite) in the ON!Track.
  • The location of any asset tracked by a stationary gateway is shown as the address of the location to which the gateway is assigned.
  • If the address is not set or maintained for that location in ON!Track, then Geolocation data (such as map location or address) will not be displayed for assets tracked by that gateway.
  • This ensures that the displayed location for assets is accurate and meaningful, based on the logical (user-provided) address rather than any physical GPS data from the gateway itself.

In summary:
If you want Geolocation data to be shown for assets at a location with a stationary gateway, make sure the address is properly entered and maintained for that location in ON!Track. Otherwise, the system cannot display any Geolocation data for those assets.

Common Questions & Troubleshooting

  • Why is my gateway offline?
    • Check power supply and network connection.
    • Ensure the gateway is activated and installed as per guidelines.
    • Check LED status for quick diagnostics.
  • Why is smart inventory not updating?
    • Make sure smart tags are within range and have working batteries.
    • Confirm the gateway is online and scanning.
    • If issues persist, a reset or reinstall may be needed.
  • What happens if no smart tags are nearby of a VIM or HEM gateway?
    • The gateway will not update inventory until tags are detected.
    • The gateway will appear as offline.

Quick Tips

  • Always install gateways according to the official guidelines.
  • Regularly check smart tag batteries and placement.
  • Use the smart inventory feature for fast, accurate asset checks.
  • For persistent issues, consult the Help Centre or contact support.
