You loaded your van with toolkits, ready for the day. But when you check ON!Track, the tools inside the kits show up as “unexpected.”
That’s because Smart Inventory didn’t recognize the tools inside kits as part of the same setup until now.
With the new Kit hierarchy feature, ON!Track now accurately tracks both the kit and its contents, providing precise inventory counts across gateway-enabled on-road vehicles such as Vans, Containers, Locations, and Heavy Equipment.
Smart Inventory now supports toolkits with their respective child assets, ensuring that everything inside a kit is tracked correctly when the kit is assigned to a gateway-enabled entity like an on-road vehicles such as Vans, Container, Location, or Heavy Equipment.

Why this matters to you?
Whether you are a:
- Warehouse Manager
- Jobsite Manager
- Service Van Driver
You now get:
- Accurate inventory counts for kits and all equipment inside them
- Correct inventory statuses (Expected, Found, Not Found, Unexpected)
- Clear visibility into where each asset is and what it’s assigned to
How it works
Before the update
- If a kit and its tools were tracked by a gateway, only the ON!Track Smart tagged kit appeared correctly.
- The tools inside appeared as “unexpected,” even though they were in the right place.
Now with Kit hierarchy
- If a kit is assigned to a gateway-enabled entity (such as a Van), and the ON!Track Smart tagged tools inside are tracked by the same gateway, and they all appear with the correct inventory status.
- The system supports up to 2 levels of nested kits, so even complex setups are covered.
Note:
Nesting refers to placing one Storage Asset inside another, forming a parent-child relationship. Think of it like this:
Understanding nesting (with Tool Levels)
- Level 1: A container or kitThis could be a toolbox, van, or storage unit placed at a location.
- Level 2: Items inside the containerThese are individual tools or equipment stored inside the kit or container.
What’s allowed:
- A container (Level 1) can hold tools (Level 2).
- A container (Level 1) can hold another container (Level 2).
What’s not allowed:
- A container inside a container inside another container (Level 3 nesting) is not supported.
Each level is connected, so if something moves out of its assigned location (like a tool leaving the toolkit or the toolkit leaving the van), the system can track it and trigger alerts.
Key user needs addressed
Inventory Correctness
- All assets tracked by a gateway and assigned to it now appear in the correct status.
- Child assets of a kit inherit the inventory status of the parent kit.
- The inventory details page shows the full list of assets, including those inside kits.
Hierarchy support
- Supports up to 2 levels of nested kits.
- Example: Kit 1 which contains a tool, all tracked correctly when Kit 1 is assigned to a location.
How ON!Track calculates inventory
- Uses both the “Current Location” and the “Assigned To” of the parent kit.
- Child assets always remain assigned to the kit, but their current location reflects the gateway-enabled entity tracking them.
Where this works
Smart Inventory now supports kit hierarchy on these gateway-enabled entities:
- Location (with a stationary gateway)
- Container (with a stationary gateway)
- Van (with van gateway)
- Heavy Equipment (with telematics gateway)
Each of these will now:
- Count child assets of kits in the correct inventory status.
- Show them in the inventory details page with accurate “current location” and “assigned to” info.
This update makes Smart Inventory more reliable, more accurate, and much easier to use, so you can focus on the job, not chasing down tools.
