Picture this: a Kit of tools is packed, tagged, and loaded into a service van heading to a jobsite. Everything is organized and ready to go. But once the van leaves the warehouse, the system shows the Kit as moved — yet the tools inside it aren't updated. The link between the Kit and its contents is lost, creating confusion, extra manual work, and inaccurate inventory records.
That's now been fixed. Automated transfers in ON!Track have been enhanced to keep Kits and their contents linked together as they move between locations, vans, heavy equipment, and other storage assets.
What’s new
A dedicated Kit storage asset type has been introduced in ON!Track. Previously, Kits and Containers shared a single asset subtype ("Container/Kit"). Now they are separated into distinct types — Kit, Container, Van, and Heavy Equipment — giving you more precise control over how assets are organized and transferred.
When a Kit is assigned to a van, heavy equipment, container, or location, automated transfers now preserve the parent-child relationship between the Kit and its contents. Tools inside the Kit stay linked to it, and inventory counts reflect the correct status for both the Kit and its child assets.
How it works
Automated transfers must be enabled in company settings by an ON!Track admin.
A default delay of 30 minutes is applied before a transfer is triggered. This means a tagged asset must be continuously detected at a new location for at least 30 minutes before the transfer begins. This prevents false transfers when a tool is simply passing through.
Once all transfer conditions are met after the delay, the transfer is typically completed within approximately 35 minutes of the tags first entering the gateway's range.
Transfer results are visible in the Smart Inventory panel or on the Smart Inventory details page.
Key Transfer Scenarios
Kit is tagged and eligible for transfer: The Kit and all of its tagged child assets are transferred together. The hierarchy is preserved — child assets remain assigned to the Kit, and the Kit's location is updated to the new destination.
Kit is not tagged, but its child assets are: The child assets are not auto-transferred. Instead, they appear in the Suggested Transfers list, where a user can manually confirm the transfer. Note: confirming a suggested transfer for a child asset will break the Kit hierarchy.
Kit or any child asset is "In Transit" or "In Confirmation": Neither the Kit nor its children are auto-transferred, and they will not appear in Suggested Transfers.
Why does it matter
Tools move constantly between warehouses, vans, and jobsites — many of which are equipped with gateways that scan and report tool locations. Previously, automated transfers could break the link between a Kit and the tools inside it. Now, ON!Track understands which tools belong together and maintains that structure automatically, giving you accurate inventory counts and fewer surprises.
Personas Impacted
This update is especially useful for:
Warehouse managers — accurate inventory counts when tools move in and out via Kits
Jobsite managers — confidence that the right tools arrived, grouped correctly
Service van drivers — faster, more reliable inventory checks before heading to the jobsite
These users often move tools between warehouses, vans, and jobsites. With gateways installed, ON!Track can scan and track tools automatically, ensuring everything remains in the correct place and group.
How to update your existing kits
Existing assets previously set up as "Container/Kit" have been migrated to the Container type. To reclassify them as the new Kit type:
Edit them individually through the ON!Track app
Use a bulk update via API (available through support — not in the app)
Known limitations
When a Kit containing tools is assigned to a storage asset (such as a van or container), and both the Kit and its contents move out of the gateway's range, an unexpected asset removal alert is triggered only for the Kit — not for the individual tools inside it.
