The problem
You load your van with toolkits, ready for the day. But when you check ON!Track, the tools inside those kits show up as "Unexpected" — even though they're exactly where they should be.
That's because Smart Inventory previously didn't recognize the relationship between a kit and the assets stored inside it. The child assets were tracked by the gateway, but the system couldn't connect them back to their parent kit.
What's new
With Kit hierarchy support, Smart Inventory now understands the parent-child relationship between a kit and its contents. When an ON!Track Smart tagged kit is assigned to a gateway-enabled entity, the child assets inside that kit are counted in the correct inventory status — not flagged as "Unexpected."
This works across all gateway-enabled entities:
Locations (with a stationary gateway)
Containers (with a stationary gateway)
Vans (with a van gateway)
Heavy Equipment (with a telematics gateway)
The feature is available on both Web and Mobile.
Smart Inventory feature for Kits (Web)
Smart Inventory feature for Kits (Mobile)
Why this matters
Whether you're a Warehouse Manager, Jobsite Manager, or Service Van Driver, you now get:
Accurate inventory counts — kits and all ON!Track Smart tagged assets inside them are counted correctly
Correct inventory statuses — assets appear as Expected, Found, Not Found, or Unexpected based on their actual state, not misclassified
Clear visibility — the inventory details page shows the full list of assets, including child assets inside kits, with accurate "Current Location" and "Assigned To" information
How it works
When a kit is assigned to a gateway-enabled entity (such as a Van) and the ON!Track Smart tagged tools inside it are tracked by the same gateway, they all appear with the correct inventory status.
Important: Only ON!Track Smart tagged (active tagged) assets are included in inventory counts. Untagged assets do not appear in the inventory count regardless of their assignment.
How ON!Track calculates inventory
The system uses both the Current Location and the Assigned To of the parent kit to determine inventory status.
Child assets remain assigned to their parent kit, but their current location reflects the gateway-enabled entity that is tracking them.
On the inventory details page, the "Assigned To" for a child asset shows the kit name, while the "Current Location" shows the gateway-enabled entity (e.g., the van or location).
Understanding nesting
Nesting means placing one storage asset inside another, forming a parent-child relationship.
Level 1: A kit or container — for example, a toolbox assigned to a van
Level 2: Items inside that kit — individual tools or equipment
Level 3: A kit inside a kit, with its own contents
What's supported:
A kit (Level 1) containing tools (Level 2) ✓
A kit (Level 1) containing another kit (Level 2) with its own child assets (Level 3) ✓
The system supports up to 3 levels of storage asset hierarchy. For example, Kit 1 contains a tool and Kit 2 as child assets; if Kit 1 is assigned to a Van, the Smart Inventory panel on that Van will include the child assets of Kit 2 in the appropriate inventory status.
What you'll see
On each gateway-enabled entity (Location, Container, Van, Heavy Equipment), the Smart Inventory panel and inventory details pages will now:
Count child assets of kits in the correct inventory status
Display them in the inventory details page with accurate "Current Location" and "Assigned To" information
